Madrid at night

When the night falls, some spots in Madrid are changing into a kind of fairy tale scenery. This first image is made at the Plaza de Cibeles, a square with a neo-classical complex of marble sculptures with fountains that has become an iconic symbol for the city of Madrid.

Venice by night

Night in Venice is quite special. All the canals, boats floating around, leaving traces of light when using long shutter speeds with your camera.

Rome at night

Coming back to Rome, here are some night shots of both the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo. I’ve also added these images to my gallery of night shots.

Bruges at night

During a long weekend in Bruges I have used the opportunity for some experimentation in night photography, and of course using the HDR-technique. The results are shown in the categories `At Night` and `Cityscapes`, but let be comment some images in this blog.

My first example is real night photography. The scenery shown suffered from intense darkness (6.30 AM on an autumn day), so how to make a picture? Manual focus, ISO set to 500, and a shutter speed of 30 seconds. A little bit of noise reduction in adobe camera raw, and the result is a clear picture with the moving red clouds adding quite a spectacular effect.

HDR at night

Producing good HDR pictures may seem easy: take multiple exposures and throw them in Photomatix Pro or another software programme. Ready. Wish it was true. It’s always quite difficult to get exactly the result that you want, in terms of sharpness or sphere. Here is a good example of high level HDR (in my view at least), with a good description of how to work.
Recently, I have experimented further with night shots in HDR. You can find them in Cityscapes, but here are the examples.

1. Night shot of Berlin Dome. Three exposures, after which I used Exposure Fusion in Photomatix Pro (and did some radial blurring to get the effect in the sky)
