Portraits

Besides my city photography, I like making portraits. Sometimes a whole day long, see my post on the wedding I shot in Rome. Lately, I have been making some new ones, which I would like to share with you.

Equistrian sports

When making portraits during the day, there is one golden rule: put your subject between you, the photographer, and the sun. To make optimal use of the light, try to find a dark background. What happens than, ideal, is that a rim light adds a nice dimension to your subject. But beware of your exposure. Sometimes you have to overexpose a little to get the light exactly right. This is what I mean, photos taken at Outdoor Brabant, an annual equestrian challenge.

Athletics

I just acquired a new piece of equipment, the Canon EOS 5D Mark iii. One of the major improvements compared to my former camera, the Mark ii, is the autofocus system. The Mark iii has borrowed the autofocus system from the Canon flagship, the EOS 1D. The Dutch championship for junior athletes being just around the corner, this weekend, was an ideal opportunity to test the autofocus system. And really, the new piece of machinery is living up to the expectations. Just take a look for yourself.

Portraits on location

The center of Breda, Netherlands, is an interesting one because of lots of new architecture. It’s also a place to be for shooting protraits, in my opinion. Please find some examples here.

Distillery

This weekend I had the opportunity to photograph one of the historical remaining craftmanships in the Netherlands: a small distillery in Dordrecht, named Rutte. Shop and small factory are combined in one building, and the whole space breaths history. The interior was very suitable for using the HDR-technique, and also for using my newly bought Fisheye lens. Spaces were small, so I had to use a very wide angle lens.
This is a selection of the images.
