Photographers add many ways to that natural one: always look back, and when appropriate, look upwards! I was in the „Grote Kerk” in Breda and composed an image out of three separate ones (second image of this post). When doing so, I thought of the other shots I made when looking upward, and will share some images in this post. Let’s start with „an oldie” of mine: the stair house in a former post office in Breda.

Ultra wide angle in Antwerp (central station)

Antwerp Central Station is by many regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium. The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. In 2007 a large-scale reconstruction work was completed to convert the station from a terminus to a through station, with now has four levels and 14 tracks.
This station is an ideal candidate to further explore the creative possibilities of the wide angle tilt-shift lens. As mentioned in my previous post, this lens allows a photographer to make panorama images very easily while preserving the perspective at all times. This is the first example: the main hall of the station (composed of three images).

Tilt-Shift in church

In Oudenbosch, in the Netherlands, a small replica of St Peters cathedral has been built in the middle of the small village. It is the Basilica for Agatha and Barbara, the construction started in 1865 and the building fits sixteen times in St Peters cathedral. It is a very quiet place, with not too many people in the church. An ideal place, of course, to try out a new tilt-shift lens that I acquired this week. The concept of a tilt-shift lens, an ideal tool for architecture photography, is well explained in this article.
Tilt-shift lenses make life easy when you want to make a panorama photo by stitching two or more images together. As with sports, also in photography you sometimes go for the challenges. Freezing the motion of bees which are landing on a flower, is quite such a challenge. These insects are much too fast to follow with your lens, so you have to find another way to freeze them. What worked for me was focus on a particular flower and start shooting when they fly in your viewfinder. And yet, very often there is nothing to see on the display at the back of the camera. Nevertheless, with some patience, sometimes it works!

Colors of Yellowstone National Park

Absolutely amazing. I don’t know any other words to write after having visited Yellowstone National Park in Montana, USA. The combination of colors that this huge volcanic area shows is unique. I learned that there are as many geysers in Yellowstone alone as all of these hot water springs in the rest of the world together. I cannot show the whole beauty of Yellowstone in one blog post, so I will write several on this explosion of colors.
The first post is about Mammoth Hot Springs, in the northern part of this National Park. The step-like terraces form as heated water moves along the Morris-Mammoth Fault. The hot water carries dissolved calcium and bicarbonate to the surface of the terraces where pressure lessens. Carbon dioxide then escapes as gas and the carbonate combines with calcium to precipitate as travertine (source, see here). Below, you’ll find the results of this chemical process.

By the way: I just started a Facebook fan page about my photo work, so please do not hesitate to like that!

Published in EOSZine

This weekend, a small part of my portfolio was published in a digital photo magazine, EOSzine, aiming Canon shooters. One of the major improvements compared to my former camera, the Mark ii, is the autofocus system. The Mark iii has borrowed the autofocus system from the Canon flagship, the EOS 1D. Even today there are still people visiting that page. Reason for me now to incorporate this topic in this blog. Quite some time ago, in 2005, I was on safari in the South African Kruger Park. We then experienced the probably most spectacular event of our lives: two groups of lions fighting for a dead giraffe. I took some pictures (with my first SLR-camera, I now wish I had had the one I have now), but my then thirteen year old daughter managed to make a short movie with a small point and shoot camera (in our car there was a man with a high quality video camera. Just five minutes before the thrilling lions fight, he ran out of power … lesson for everybody, always carry enough spare batteries!). The movie was put on YouTube, and is now approaching a milestone: almost 100.000 views. This is the movie, when you click on „read more”, you’ll see the pictures.

Church in Breda

In the middle of Breda, the „Grote Kerk”, the big church, is the eye-catching, 15th century piece of history of the town center. I had bought a pretty good camera, and with the raw-files coming out of that machine and the miracles that the latest version of Photoshop can do with these files, why use HDR any longer? Moreover, I often had the impression that the HDR’s were not as sharp as they should be. So one starts thinking, reading and most of all trying and experimenting. The scenery shown suffered from intense darkness (6.30 AM on an autumn day), so how to make a picture? Manual focus, ISO set to 500, and a shutter speed of 30 seconds. A little bit of noise reduction in adobe camera raw, and the result is a clear picture with the moving red clouds adding quite a spectacular effect.

HDR at night

Producing good HDR pictures may seem easy: take multiple exposures and throw them in Photomatix Pro or another software programme.
